The Royal Spanish Football Federation has postponed all 24 of Wednesday's Copa del Rey first-round ties after a train collision in the province of Toledo killed at least 30 people.

The RFEF announced the decision on Wednesday, saying the matches had been called off "as a show of respect and solidarity with all the victims", with new dates for the postponed ties to be announced soon. Five top-flight sides were due to play on Wednesday — Levante, Alavés, Valencia, Celta Vigo and Real Betis — with ties including Navalcarnero against Real Betis, Salamanca against Celta Vigo and Tavernes against Valencia.

The collision happened at around 08:54 local time on Wednesday morning, between Los Yébenes and Urda in Toledo province, when a Renfe high-speed service collided with a stationary Iryo train, according to initial information reported by the Spanish news agency Europa Press from sources in the transport ministry. Carriages were derailed, with several tumbling onto a slope beside the track, and high-speed services between Madrid and Andalusia were brought to a halt as rescue teams raced to the scene. At least 30 people were killed, Reuters reported, and later reports put the death toll at 50, with 179 injured. It was the second deadly accident in less than a year on the line connecting Madrid to southern Andalusia.

In its statement, the federation said: "As a sign of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred early Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, the RFEF has suspended all 24 matches of the first round of the Spanish Championship-Copa del Rey (King's Cup) originally scheduled for this afternoon and evening." The RFEF added that it would announce the revised tournament schedule and the final kick-off times for the postponed matches in the coming days.

Real Madrid published an official statement expressing their "profound sorrow and grief", offering condolences to the families of the dead and support for the injured. Barcelona posted condolences on X, while Atlético Madrid said: "We share in the grief of the families and friends of the victims of the tragic accident that occurred this morning in the province of Toledo, and we offer them our sincere condolences, and we wish a speedy recovery to all the injured." The three clubs, along with Real Sociedad, do not enter the competition until the round of 32 in December. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on X that he was "shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo" and remained in contact with the transport minister and the president of Castilla-La Mancha.

The crash also disrupted rail services between Madrid and Andalusia, affecting travel for several teams and their fans. It is not yet known whether Thursday's 14 first-round ties will go ahead, with the federation yet to decide. The Copa del Rey, founded in 1903, is Spain's oldest football cup competition.
